The Zillertalbahn
an Austrian narrow-gauge railway

The Zillertalbahn is an Austrian narrow-gauge railway in the Bosnian gauge of 760 mm. It leads through the Zillertal in Tyrol from Jenbach to Mayrhofen. The owner and operator of the route is Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe AG - formerly Zillertalbahn AG - based in Jenbach. The company is primarily involved in the neighboring communities of the route. In addition to the railway, the company also operates some bus lines in the region.

Since the end of the 1860s, due to the bad traffic conditions in the Zillertal, it was repeatedly demanded in the press to build a railway line. The existing road was poorly navigable, for example through marshes. Also, travelers to Mayrhofen had to plan an overnight stay in Zell am Ziller. But it was not until 1892 that the community leaders agreed on a so-called railway committee, which finally decided to build the railway three years later.

It consists of a crest line high above the bottom of the valley, as well as five different access routes leading from Zillertalstrasse to this section of the route. While an average of 8 kilometers of access roads can be used toll-free, a toll charge has to be paid for the almost 20-kilometer-long central route when driving with motor vehicles.

The apex of the Zillertal Höhenstraße leads along the western side of the Zillertal valley in a heavily tortuous way. This section of the section is mostly situated above the tree line at altitudes of about 1700 to 2100 meters, in an area that extends west of the municipality of Zell am Ziller. This section is laid out as a panoramic road, and in its southern part, the high road reaches the highest point with the Arbisjoch head located at an altitude of 2133 m. The apex is mainly a single-lane road, which has always been used to provide alternative routes, especially in the case of bottlenecks. The difficulty level according to the Denzel-Alpine road scale is about 2 to 3 in this area.
